Who can take this course?

  • (Online) Students who have completed all three courses of Joy of Living Level 1 with the accompanying homework (total: 50 hrs), as well as Joy of Living Level 2 Course 1 (total: 12.5 hrs)
  • (In person) Students who have attended a Joy of Living Level 1 in-person weekend workshop or retreat and completed a total of 50 hours of formal meditation practice, as well as the online Joy of Living Level 2 Course 1 (total: 12.5 hrs)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Basic goodness – the simple fact that you are, right here, right now, as complete, whole, and perfect as you could ever hope to be – is already present within you. This nature of yours is imbued with the fundamental wish to be free from suffering, seen and unseen. Through cultivation of compassion for yourself and others, basic goodness and its qualities will naturally shine forth. All you have to do is recognize it and strengthen the recognition through practice.

In this course, you will learn about and meditate on compassion, the second of the four immeasurables. This set of practices forms the basis for understanding how to relate skillfully and supportively to the suffering you and others are facing. Just as with love, you will learn these practices iteratively, beginning with sending compassion to yourself and then extending it to include others. During this course, Mingyur Rinpoche will share a range of strategies for opening your heart and applying the practice of compassion in both formal meditation and everyday life.
