The goal of meditation practice is to bring awareness to every moment of one’s life, not only the time spent in formal meditation. Setting aside time each day to cultivate awareness is a crucial part of the process. The more time you devote to meditation “on the cushion,” the easier it is to bring awareness into daily life.
When beginning a daily meditation practice, it is important to meditate in short, frequent sessions. A good guideline is to practice less than you know you can, i.e, break up with meditation before it breaks up with you. Letting practice sessions be short keeps your meditation fresh while repeating it many times enhances your meditation. As you progress, slowly increase the time spent in formal meditation as well as applying awareness, short times, many times, in your daily life.
Meditation is to recognize awareness. When you try to meditate, there will be periods when you are lost in thoughts, and other times when you are aware and in the present moment. Whether you are using a support for the practice, like your breath, or simply resting in awareness, the sign of meditation is that you know what you are doing. In other words, you know you are watching your breath. Meditative awareness can be practiced anywhere, anytime under any circumstances.
One of the most common misconceptions about meditation is that one should not have any thoughts while meditating. Luckily, this is not the case. Thinking is a natural function of the mind, and there is no need to stop thoughts from occurring. When you are meditating and you realize that you have been lost in thought, simply return your awareness to the object of your meditation. That’s it! You may even use thoughts as the object of meditation, or resting in open awareness, letting thoughts come and go as they like while simply resting in awareness. The key point is that thoughts are a natural part of meditation. As you grow more familiar with meditative awareness, you will see that thoughts are not obstacles to meditation. On the contrary, you may find that thoughts actually can be reminders for recognizing awareness.
Meditation allows you to be more aware and present in whatever activity you are doing. This has benefits in all aspects of daily life. In relationships, meditation will help you develop unconditional love that springs from a place of deeply seeing the other person. At work, meditation will enable you to be more focused, creative, and efficient, while at the same time being emotionally balanced. In terms of health, meditation has been shown to have an impact in many areas, including lowering stress levels, increasing immune system functioning, and increasing the capacity to cope with illness and chronic pain.
This cohort is designed to help you make meditation a part of your daily life, ensuring real progress and transformation.
If you’ve struggled with consistency in the past, this program provides structure, accountability, and community — essential ingredients for turning meditation into a lasting habit.
While occasional guided meditations bring relief in difficult moments, real transformation comes from following a path. This structured journey helps you move beyond “once in a while” to a steady, integrated practice that brings long-term change.
No prior experience is necessary. The program is designed to guide beginners step-by-step, while also offering depth for those with previous meditation practice.
Each week, you’ll join a live, 75-minute interactive session led by Tergar guides. These sessions are designed to help you apply and deepen your understanding of the teachings. During each session, you’ll:

The end of a cohort is just the beginning of the next phase of your practice! Here is how your access works and the options available for your continued journey.
Even after the live sessions conclude, your cohort materials (including the curriculum, guided meditations, and session recordings) remain with your Joy of Living account.
Subscription Status: You will retain access to these materials even if you cancel your Joy of Living Online subscription and reactivate it at a later time.
Important Requirement: To ensure you keep your history and materials, you must use the same email address whenever you re-subscribe.
Most students choose to move through the levels sequentially to deepen their meditation practice:
Completed Level 1? You are eligible to join the next Level 2 Cohort.
Completed Level 2? You are ready to join the next Level 3 Cohort.
Once you have completed the full Joy of Living curriculum (Levels 1, 2, and 3), you have several paths to keep your practice vibrant:
Advanced Practice Cohorts: Join another Level 1, 2, or 3 cohort for more in-depth practice of the core teachings.
“What To Do Next” Sessions: Participate in our new regular live sessions specifically titled “What To Do Next,” designed to help you integrate your practice into daily life after the formal cohort structure ends.
If you aren’t sure which path is right for you, we encourage you to Talk with a Guide. You can schedule a one-on-one interview to discuss your experience and get personalized advice on the next steps for your meditation journey.
