Meditating with Pain

No matter who we are, we all experience physical pain at least once in a while. These experiences of pain can be overwhelming at times. Bringing our awareness to pain and using it as an object of meditation can help us learn about the nature of pain and how to relate to it. In this video, Mingyur Rinpoche guides us in a short meditation and briefly outlines four prospective experiences we may have when practicing pain meditation. “Pain meditation” may sound strange at first, but as you might find out, pain can be a great support for meditation!

Reflection Question

  • When you bring your awareness to the pain in your body, does your experience of it change in any way? Are you able to relate to the pain differently than when you are not embracing it with awareness?
